Care Delivery Options

During business hours, The Animal Hospital at Steiner Ranch has a veterinarian and support personnel on duty who are trained and equipped to care for your pet, including one or more veterinary technicians or veterinary assistants working together with our receptionists and other support staff to help your pet.  We're pleased to offer the following services in our Austin veterinary hospital:

At The Animal Hospital at Steiner Ranch, our schedule is carefully structured to provide adequate time to see each client and pet based on the expected services, so we ask that you make an appointment in advance whenever possible. We strive to stay on schedule to respect your time, but emergencies and other delays do sometimes occur. Arriving a few minutes early (15 minutes early for first-time clients) will help us check you in and see you on time. We sometimes can accept same-day needs, but appointments receive priority. We will always attempt to accommodate all pets needing care during clinic hours, unless we believe the animal would be best served elsewhere.

In-Patient Care ("Drop Offs")

Pet health care works best when you and the doctor and technicians interact during the examination and discuss the issues, diagnostics, findings, treatment options, and progress in real time.  At times, though, it may be necessary to have your pet spend some time in the hospital for extended diagnostic testing, observation, and treatment. Don't expect to just hand us your pet and go, however! We may need you to complete a questionnaire or interview about your pet's history and issues so that we have information to work from while you are not available. We will work with you on drop-off and pick-up times to address your pet's medical needs. We do not offer overnight boarding, so all pets must be discharged at the end of the day to go home or to an overnight care facility.

Urgent Care

The Animal Hospital at Steiner Ranch is also here to provide your pet urgent care when the condition is not life-threatening, but your pet needs to be seen promptly for an acute medical issue. We will try to schedule these needs as promptly as our capacity allows, but clients with pre-scheduled appointments will receive priority. Our staff will try to work your pet into any remaining openings in our schedule.  If we can't, the UrgentVet facility in Lakeway (https://urgentvet.com/location/lakeway/) is open 3PM-11PM weekdays and 10AM-8PM weekends.

Emergency Care

Emergencies can be things such as poisoning, ongoing bleeding, seizures, hit by car, snake bites, heat exhaustion, chocolate ingestion, and more.  If your pet has an emergency during hospital hours, please call immediately. If we can determine that your pet's needs can be handled promptly and adequately here, we will have you come in. However, if the extent of your pet's needs, or our time and resource availability at that time, indicate your pet would be better served elsewhere, we may refer you to an emergency center, urgent care facility, or another general practice. Your pet's needs are the #1 priority, not our revenue. The doctor will decide the best approach for the situation. Knowing about the nature of your pet's emergency will also allow us to prepare the facility and staff to provide care rapidly when you and your pet arrive.

If we are closed, there are several well-equipped and very capable veterinary emergency hospitals in the Austin area that can handle critical cases that can't wait until our next business day. The nearest is Austin Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (AVES) at 7300 Ranch Road 2222. Call 512-343-2837.

Types of Pets Seen and Treated

The Animal Hospital at Steiner Ranch is primarily a "companion animal practice" that provides care for household pets, including:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Rabbits*
  • Pocket Pets*
  • Reptiles*
  • Birds*

*Limited services. We often refer unique pets to Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital, which is a fellow AAHA-accredited hospital with a focus on exotic pets.

Payments

Payment is required at the time of the pet's discharge or when medications or food are picked up.  The Animal Hospital at Steiner Ranch accepts payment by MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, cash, and checks. So that we can focus on medical care and not administrative activities, we do not invoice or carry client account balances unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

We can provide estimates for all tests, treatments, surgeries, and hospitalizations. You are welcome to request an estimate at any time for your expected charges.
